These are the empty shells of some scary looking insect in Auckland. I forget what they are called, but these empty "husks" were all over this tree.

These look like what we would call cicadas in the US. Part of a Locust family, however, this particular kind only come out once every 17 years! We just had it last summer, very interesting!
